B'nai Brith and Canadian Jewish Congress flex their muscles once again to demand that Liberal Leader Stephane Dion dump a candidate who they claim made anti-Semitic comments.

CBC - Liberals ask candidate to step down over 9/11 comments

Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion has asked Winnipeg-area candidate Lesley Hughes to step down over an old column in which she suggested Israeli companies were given a heads-up about the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S.

Hughes, who learned of Dion's request from CBC News in Winnipeg, said she was stunned.

Click here to read what Lesley Hughes actually said.

Article from Israeli newspaper stating that some employees were warned of attacks.

Judging from the comments to this article on the CBC website, many Canadians are stunned as well. [Read comments]. And Ms Hughes is clearly not the only person to have questions about Israel. Fox News, a right wing broadcaster with a definite pro-Israel stance presents some very interesting information about Israel in this report.

G&M - The Jewish vote

Under Mr. Harper, there has been a policy of unconditional support for Israel and by extension the Jewish community here in Canada. When war broke out in Lebanon, Mr. Harper rushed to "our" defence to the exclusion of Arab Canadians. I suppose I should have been yelling "Right on Steve," but I wasn't.

As a Moroccan Jew (most of us in North America are descendants of Eastern Europe), I have always seen more of what we have in common with Arab Canadians than what drives us apart. We are Semites from the same cradle. Sons and daughters, if Isaac and Ishmael. My family shares food, song and culture with the Muslim Arab world.

Toronto Star - Former Israeli soldier bears witness to 'dirty' occupation

Since March 2004, when he completed his three-year stint of military service – including 14 months in Hebron – the Israeli-born son of a Canadian father and American mother has been gathering testimony from Israeli soldiers about their experiences while enforcing the 41-year occupation....

When Israeli soldiers in the West Bank spot a suspicious-looking parcel in the street, for example, they do not destroy it with gunfire or call in the bomb experts.Instead, says Shaul, they select a Palestinian man – any Palestinian man – and force him to inspect the parcel. Either he'll blow himself up or he won't.

To gain experience detaining suspects, rookie soldiers are ordered to enter a house almost at random, rouse everyone inside, collar a man – any man – and take him away, only to release him later and send him home, terrified but free.

Games played by Israeli soldiers using Palestinians as pawns include the choking game and the "shu" game, neither of them gentle. They can be seen on Shaul's website (www.breakingthesilence.org.il).

ISM Rafah: Israeli navy vessels again open fire on Gazan fishermen

On Monday 8th September at least ten fishing vessels left Gaza City port and traveled out into the Mediterranean Sea up to 10 miles offshore.

ISM volunteers were onboard three of the boats. They were equipped with video cameras to record and document the aggressive actions of the Israeli naval gunboats towards the fishing vessels. As per the volunteers' experiences on all previous outings, many of the boats were harassed and shot at by the Israeli gunboats. The soldiers on these gunboats are committing war crimes by shooting at unarmed fishermen who are just trying to earn a living and feed their families.

FREE GAZA SHIPS ARRIVE IN GAZA!!

PHOTOS OF THE ARRIVAL

In August, unarmed Palestinians, Israelis and internationals will sail directly to Gaza without seeking permission from Israeli authorities. They include an 81-year-old Catholic nun, an 83-year-old Holocaust survivor and the international press (including Tony Blair's journalist sister-in-law, Lauren Booth)

PAJU (Palestinian and Jewish Unity) - ISRAEL’S APARTHEID LAWS

This summer the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) debated 16 legislative initiatives that damage human and civil rights. These include:

  1. A change to the Civil Damages Law: The state of Israel will retroactively be absolved of all responsibility for damages caused by the Israeli army to residents of the occupied territories. The bill has passed first reading.
  2. A change to the Criminal Code: Israeli police will no longer need to document their interrogations of suspects in security cases, making torture more likely. The bill has passed second and third reading.
  3. The 8th renewal of the ‘temporary’ Citizenship Law: This law prevents Israeli Arab citizens from living in Israel with Palestinian spouses from the West Bank and Gaza.
  4. A proposal concerning the distribution of JNF land: The JNF (Jewish National Fund) owns 13% of the land in Israel and distributes this land exclusively to Jews. The new proposal confirms the JNF’s right to continue this discriminatory land policy. The bill passed first reading in the Knesset with a comfortable majority.
  5. The jailing of "illegal fighters" without trial: This bill will let the government keep anyone it declares "a member of an enemy force" in jail without trial until hostilities end between Israel and that force. The proposal has passed second and third reading in the Knesset.

All these legal initiatives violate basic human and civil rights. Arab Israelis are barred from obtaining land and cannot marry whom they wish, while Jewish Israelis have no such restrictions placed upon them. Palestinians in the occupied territories face the destruction of their homes and property without compensation; interrogation without due process; torture without protection; and imprisonment for years without trial. These are all common Israeli practices. The new "laws" will simply make all of this "legal".

These Israeli laws recall the worst aspects of apartheid South Africa. They are based on racism and their goal, as in White South Africa, is to strip the indigenous population of its rights, its land and its future.

Israeli law is, in fact, the law of an apartheid state.

G&M - Green candidate accused of anti-Israel forum posts gets May's support

OTTAWA -- Green Party Leader Elizabeth May is affirming her support for an Ottawa-area Green Party candidate accused of "Israel bashing," just one day after citing anti-Semitism as grounds for rejecting one of her B.C. candidates.

[Dr. Qais Ghanem is the founder of the Arab-Jewish dialogue group, Potlucks for Peace and is highly regarded Arabs, Jews and "others" in Ottawa for his tireless work on peace, justice and human rights issues. Apparently his anti-semitic statement was "The Israeli point of view is voiced non-stop by the North American media which is controlled by a small oligarchy."  This is a statement of fact and the media monopoly that we have in this country should never have been allowed to happen, whether the ownership is Jewish or any other national, religious or business group.]
